National Union of Teachers Industrial Action - Thursday 24th April

You will be aware from the national media that members of the NUT have voted for a national strike in response to the School Teachers’ Review Body’s recommended below inflation pay increases for teachers. The industrial action will be for one day and will take place on Thursday, 24 April 2008.   The dispute is a national one and therefore there is nothing the school or County Council can do to resolve the situation.

Membership to this union in the school is significant. It will not be possible to open the school for students because there will be insufficient staff available to cover classes or undertake general supervision. Therefore, the school will have to close to students on that day. In these circumstances, my first concern has to be for the health and safety of our young people and consequently students should not attend school on that day. Teaching staff of other professional associations who will be in school and have sixth form students will ensure their lessons go ahead but this will be for post 16 students only. This is possible because smaller numbers make it manageable, students will not attend lessons that would otherwise be taught by an NUT member and 6th formers are used to the privilege of arriving and leaving the site during a day depending on their timetable commitments.

I am sorry for any inconvenience that this causes you and your family.
